Dwayne Deer, 47, who pleaded guilty in federal court in Jackson last year to conspiracy to defraud banks, surrendered his law license in November, which would have given him the right to retrain as a lawyer. A McComb lawyer who helped clients receive more than $1.5 million in divorce settlement money from a former employer will never be able to appeal again. On Thursday, the Mississippi Supreme Court permanently barred Deer - who joined the Mississippi Bar in 1996 - for his involvement in a fraud program.
The settlement involved a separate case involving a $1.5 million divorce settlement between Deer and James Phillips. A bankruptcy judge ruled that Deer gave the money to Phillips in exchange for preparing warranty statements and handing it over to California men, court documents show.
In addition to providing false information, Deer allowed Phillips to obtain more than $1.5 million in loans, loans and other financial support from more than 20 banks in Mississippi, according to court documents. Deer operated his firm from an office space rented to Phillips, who was his principal client during the conspiracy.
